A young vandal has been charged after being caught out through comments posted on his Facebook page.

Portsmouth Central Library was forced to close for five months and carry out £150,000 worth of repairs after the 16-year-old flooded the building.

Carpets had to be re-fitted, a new computer system was installed and a number of irreplaceable books were lost as a result of his actions.

After initially pleading not guilty, the youth was confronted with a transcript from his Facebook page, in which he seemed to admit to the crime.

When asked if he caused the damage, he replied: 'Kind of, yeah. I've kept it to myself, a few mates know.'

He has now changed his plea to guilty, admitting to plugging up the sinks in the men's toilets on the third floor and allowing water to run from the taps all night.
