- Conspiracy theories have been rife online after the BBC’s website went offline last night for almost an hour.
Rumours that the site had been attacked by online group Anonymous began to circulate, with others blaming the beginning of its decision to cut a quarter of its online resources as being behind the problem.
Peter Horrocks, director of the BBC World Service, tweeted: "We're having technical problems with the BBC website – they are being looked into urgently. Apologies from BBC News."
This was later following by an apology from Steve Herrmann, editor of the BBC news website, who wrote in a blog: "It's not often we get a message from the BBC's technical support teams saying, 'Total outage of all BBC websites'. But for getting on for an hour this evening, until just before midnight, that's what happened. We haven't yet had a full technical debrief, but it's clear it was a major network problem.”
No official explanation has yet been given for the site going down, but it has allowed some to point to the £103 million cuts which are to be made to the BBC’s digital output by 2013/2014 and ask whether it will become a regular occurrence. The Full Story Is Here | |
