Social networking sites have brought a number of positives since their inception. They have made it much easier for people to communicate and stay in touch with the people they know. They have also made it much easier for people to keep abreast of developments in areas they are interested in thanks to fan pages and other features.

However, social networking sites have also caused controversy because of privacy problems. Now it is being reported that sites like Facebook may actually have played a part in increased instances of online exploitation from paedophiles and other sexual predators.

According to annual reports from the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre, much of the problem lies in the fact that children and young people don’t recognise the dangers of social networking.

The reports raise concerns about how young people treat social networking sites – often uploading explicit images of themselves on sites like Facebook without sufficient understanding of how vulnerable they actually are when they are online.

It is difficult to know what can be done about this problem since all the images are uploaded voluntarily, but the CEOP will follow up the reports with a campaign to try and raise awareness about the dangers of social networking.
